韓國總統李明博獲頒GWU榮譽博士學位

President Lee Myung-Bak received GW honorary degree

Dear GW Alumni, students and GW friends in Korea, It is with great pleasure we inform you that on June 17, 2009, GW President Steven Knapp presented His Excellency Lee Myung-Bak, president of the Republic of Korea, with an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from GW. The honorary degree was conferred in a ceremony at GW before an audience of distinguished guests including United States Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Kathleen Stephens, Republic of Korea Ambassador to the United States Han Duk-soo, and other members of the diplomatic corps, as well as GW trustees, students, alumni, faculty and staff. Photos from the event can bee seen here: View Photo Gallery. For the complete press release and video of the ceremony at GW with remarks of President Lee, please visit: http://www.gwu.edu/~newsctr/pressrelease.cfm?ann_id=31667

President Lee has strong ties to GW, having served as a visiting scholar in 1999, studying and teaching international business. Many of you know about the great historic relationship between the Republic of Korea and GW, which has spanned more than a century. It began in 1892, when Suh Jai P'il received his medical degree from GW, becoming the first Korean to graduate from an American medical school. Dr. Syngman Rhee, the founder of the Republic of Korea, is another famous GW alumnus, who graduated in 1907. Over 250 students from the Republic of Korea were currently enrolled in GW this last academic year and Korea has the largest concentration of GW alumni outside of the United States. GW alumni- representatives of GW Korean Alumni Association - Dr. YounTaek Lee, President, and Mr. Jae Seong Choi, Vice President of the GW Korean Alumni Association - traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the ceremony. We believe this is an important event which will help us grow and strengthen the GW community in Korea and connection between Korea and GW. Please stay connected to GW: share your ideas and get involved in alumni activities organized by the GW Alumni Association in Korea!

Please contact us with any questions and suggestions regarding GW alumni activities in Korea.
